Samatha Meditation Group for Beginners

Samatha Meditation Group for Beginners – 9.00am to 10.00am @The Garden Room

Samatha meditation is an effective but gentle way of training the mind to develop inner strength and freedom from turmoil. This produces a happier and more unified state of mind, leading on to clarity and understanding. This path from calm (samatha) to insight (vipassanā) was followed by the Buddha himself and is a central tradition of Buddhist meditation.

If you wish to participate please mail martina@treffynnon.com or call 01239 820352

Further details can also be found at https://www.samatha.org/  the website for the National Centre for Samatha Meditation in Mid Wales.

Senior Citizens Lunch Club @ The Meeting Room, Newport Memorial Hall
Jan 22 @ 12:00 pm

Newport Luncheon Club meets in the Committee Room in Newport Memorial Hall on alternate Fridays when the meal starts at 12.30 pm. The food is home-cooked by volunteers and is healthy fare, consisting of 2 courses and tea or coffee. The cost of £3 includes a raffle ticket.

Carers who bring people to the meal are also welcome to stay.

If you are attending for the first time it would help with catering if you telephone one of the organisers beforehand.

If anyone needs help with transport to and from the Hall, the local Country Cars (Community Transport) team (Gaynor and Ken Davies 01239 820090) may be able to assist.

The Senior Citizens Welfare Committee organises a Christmas Lunch and a “Mystery Outing” each year for Luncheon Club members. There is also an outing for senior citizens in the summer, and at Christmas Newport people who are 90 years of age and over receive a Christmas present from the Committee, as do people who are housebound and those who have moved into a home elsewhere.

Donations to support all this work are always welcome.

The Luncheon Club is looking for extra volunteers to help produce the meal. This can be great fun and very rewarding work so if anyone feels they could spare a few hours now and then, or if any group would like to start a new team, please get in touch with Rosemary Elmes (01239 820104) or Elaine Lloyd (01239 820037)

About Meriel & the Yoga

Based in West Wales, Meriel shares an approach to movement and yoga associated with Vanda Scaravelli. This way of practicing cultivates presence  and vitality by attending to the quality and refinement in the movement and breath one experiences. We are able to be dynamic if needed and address functional movements in our lives whilst touching on quietness within.

Exploring movement as a way to deeply release and relax patterns of tension in the body and our whole lives we begin to experience a type of wholeness or ease of being. The multi-facted strengths uncovered by this quiet approach are radically different from stressful overextension and over-exertion. Subtlety allows ‘our best energy‘ (Diane Long) and that state of grace offers us a return to our natural vibrancy and vividness.

TCTSY

Meriel also facilities TCTSY privately as a body-based yoga intervention for people  who’ve experienced chronic relational trauma. TCTSY is researched & continues to evolve with Dr Bessel Van de Kolk’s team at the Trauma Centre, Justice Institute, Boston.  Meriel is committed to offering trauma-informed yoga and spaces for all.

Her teachers

Meriel works with anyone at all who is interested regardless of experience. Her approach is inspired by the teaching of Vanda Scaravelli as taught to her by Scaravelli’s long term student Diane Long and her student Christine Borg.

Iyengar Yoga @ The Garden Room
Jan 25 @ 6:15 pm – 8:15 pm

A relaxed Yoga session which gives wonderful well being.

About the Iyengar method: Yoga is one of the oldest systems of personal development in the world. This system of balancing the body, mind and spirit was formulated by ancient yogis, who understood man’s essential nature and realised a way to utilise all of man’s inner resources to live in harmony with himself and the environment.

Pupils learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of asana (posture). Pranayama (breath control) is gradually introduced once students have a firm foundation of yoga practise. Yoga practice both relaxes and energizes the body and mind and brings vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration,self-confidence and mental calm. Yoga is suitable for all types of people and all levels of fitness.

Practicing Yoga helps you overcome and prevent many stresses, strains, aches and pains. It promotes a firm foundation for health and well-being.

About Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar: The world’s most widely practised method of yoga is that taught by Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India. Born on December 14, 1918, in Bellur, India, he has studied and practised yoga continuously for over 70 years.

Iyengar’s thorough study, understanding and mastery of yoga are unrivalled in modern times. Pilates @ The Garden Room
Jan 26 @ 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Joseph H. Pilates was born in 1883 in Germany. His father, Heinrich Friedrich Pilates, was a prize-winning gymnast, and his mother worked as a naturopath.

Pilates was a sickly child and suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever, and he dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength. Pilates came to believe that the “modern” life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health. He devised a series of exercises and training-techniques related to encouraging the use of the mind to control muscles; focusing attention on core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and provide support for the spine; teaching awareness of breath and of alignment of the spine, and strengthening the deep torso and abdominal muscles.

Pilates is a method of body conditioning that helps to build flexibility and muscle strength; encourages the development of a strong core and improves coordination, agility and balance. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, toning the deep abdominals and stabilising the back.

Marianne specialises in teaching small classes as well as running private 1 to 1 & 1 to 2 sessions. Pilates Matwork classes include a combination of exercises and stretching techniques.  Classes include the use of small props and equipment.  These are all provided, but are also available for purchase.  Before joining a class, Marianne recommends a 1 to 1 session.
